The akadama is a clay of volcanic origin collected at a depth of 3 meters from the forest of Criptomerie underground in Japan. It is harvested and dried, heated to remove organisms and parasites, and finally pulverized in different sizes.

The following main characteristics: it provides the right balance of water, air and nutrients; contains huge amounts of minerals thanks its volcanic origin (thus allowing to be able to better adjust the fertilization in order to provide only the nutrients that are desired); lets you know when to water, when the moisture since losing its color from dark began yellowish-brown; presents a neutral pH (pH 6.5 to 6.9).

These characteristics make it a great substrate for growing bonsai so that it is often used as component of the substrate.
